About Teacher Sandy

Sandy Chen has enjoyed playing and performing music her whole life. She started playing piano at the age of 6, and bass at the age of 9. Sandy is a graduate of UBC with a Bachelor of Music, and a RCM certified teacher in piano Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced levels.

As a teacher, Sandy is patient and structural. She is firm with her expectations while maintaining  positive relationships with her students. Her commitment and dedication to teaching has led to her students placing in different music festivals and competitions, also entering university with scholarships. Sandy is currently teaching piano and double bass lessons.

More about Sandy's academical journey

Her musical mentors include David Vandereyk (piano), former VSO principal Ken Friedman (Double Bass) and VSO bassist David Brown. As a teacher, Sandy has over fifteen years teaching experience working with students of all ages and she has taught RCM exams at all levels. She also has experience with competition preparation and university audition preparation. Outside her private practice, she has taught MYC (Music for Young Children) group classes, she has coached workshops, led sectionals for the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra, and she has also played in many orchestras and ensembles in the Vancouver Lower Mainland. She also enjoys being a piano accompanist for choirs and soloists.
